The 2024 New Zealand Geothermal Workshop was held in Auckland this month.

Our team presented seven papers, which you can access through our knowledge hub:

Superhot Geothermal – A Net Zero window of opportunity for New Zealand?

C. Bromley, A. Heuser, I. Chambefort, M. Palmer, D. Rybalka, B. Carey

This paper explores the superhot geothermal opportunity, summarising a resource inventory for onshore NZ geothermal prospects and an electricity market modelling study.

Geothermal The Next Generation: Five years of findings to propose a new exploration phase for New Zealand

I. Chambefort, C. Miller, O. Bachmann, J. Barreto, S.Bannister, E. Bertrand, T. Driesner, W. Heise, S. Jylhänkangas, A. Kirkby, W.Kissling, C. Massiot, S. Milicich, N. Mortimer, S. Rooyakkers, L. Seelig, T.Solms, C. Wilson

This paper summarises the results, findings and new models of the GNG programme with a focus on resource exploration and delineation.

Expanding the Limits of Experimental Water-Rock Interaction: The Supercritical Laboratory at GNS Science

B. Mountain, P. Rendel, L. Sajkowski

This paper outlines the capabilities of the Experimental Geochemistry Laboratory at GNS Science, including expansion of capabilities into the supercritical pressure-temperature region.

Unlocking our potential: a superhot geothermal future for Aotearoa New Zealand

D. Kissick, S. Bendall, A. Campbell

This paper outlines questions and challenges to be considered to address potential barriers to a superhot geothermal-powered future.

Refining geological models through 3D gravity modelling at Wairakei, Tauhara and Rotokawa geothermal fields

Barretto J., Miller C., Carson L, Alcaraz S.

This paper summarises three-dimensional forward and inverse modelling of gravity data from Wairākei, Tauhara and Rotokawa geothermal fields, used to reconcile geological models with geophysical observations.

Reactive transport modeling of NCG reinjection at Ngawha geothermal field

Vaibhav Rajput, Eylem Kaya, Bridget Lynne, Dale E. Altar

This paper explores the effects of additional NCG reinjection on key reservoir parameters through a comprehensive modelling study for Ngāwhā field.

Reactive transport modeling of fluid- NCG reinjection in Nga Tamariki geothermal field

Yeftamikha Siahaan, Eylem Kaya, Dale E. Altar, John Mering, Denni Subekti, Ayu Utami, Roxanne Atayde, Kelly Melia, Fabian Sepulveda

This paper provides insights into mineral reactions, geochemical processes and geothermal reservoir response at Ngā Tamariki under various NCG reinjection conditions.
