This afternoon in Rotorua, we joined the energy sector and community to celebrate the New Zealand Government’s launch of a national geothermal strategy for Aotearoa New Zealand.

From the Ground Up – A strategy to unlock New Zealand’s geothermal potential sets out how geothermal energy can play a larger role in New Zealand’s energy system, regional economies and industrial growth. The strategy includes an ambition to double geothermal energy use by 2040.

The strategy focuses on practical actions to support development, including:

  • updating regulatory settings so they are clearer and fit for purpose
  • improving access to geothermal data
  • reducing early stage risk for new projects
  • supporting greater uptake of geoheat by businesses and communities

Our team at Earth Sciences New Zealand is proud to have helped shape the strategy and see the potential mapped across the full geothermal spectrum. From the early stages, our scientists were providing expert advice, technical review, modelling, and many of the diagrams and data that underpin the final document.🤝 Today’s launch is a new starting line for the geothermal community and for our team.

The strategy identifies that New Zealand needs to drive geothermal science, research and innovation, including next-generation technologies and highlights superhot technology development and exploration are key priority of the the New Zealand Government
